When you understand the rules, break all of them.

When you trust your equipment, follow only your ears.

You will never have the first impression of yourself, you will always hear you.

If it's broken, use it.

oh, forgot. Something a guy told me during school, and that stuck with me for ages.

Kill your darlings. If it's not good enough, delete it, no matter how much you love the idea.

Some day, I wish to be brave enough to do that more often.

Don't forget to eat. I do this all the time when working on songs for long periods of time.

The day never ends well when you forget to eat lunch and/or dinner, then 11 pm rolls around and you're starving.

When will I learn...

let us revive this thread from the dead!

I think that one of the most important things is to not get caught up in the reading and the studying and the learning of the programs, but to actually USE the programs and experiment, You could know everything a book tells you about sound design, but still not have any idea what to do with that information, if you don't have the creativity to use it. Experimenting will give you interesting results, and will really help you develop your sound!

Some things need to be very slight in the mix: You shouldn't hear it immediately, but you should miss it, if it is away.

Stereo imagers, reverb, multiband compressors, regular compressors, sonic maximizers, 'soundgoodizers', harmonic exciters, and saturators.

Never use any of those if you're mastering your own track. Your mix should sound exactly the way you want it to sound. If there's something off, fix the mix.

The most important sentence to remember if you want to be a producer full time.

Also, it's not always wise to sit on a track and not work on it for a while as you may lose inspiration for the track.

Put effects like reverb and delay on busses and aux tracks instead of on the main track you're applying the effect to.

This enables you to mix both the dry signal and the wet signal separately and more easily and reduces phasing issues.

Hm, I've seen a few times on here that you should only be making what sounds good to you, and people will just happen to like it. I guess I can and can't argue that. I'm an entertainer in nature, I enjoy entertaining people and participating in activities that will entertain people. I make music with the intention of entertaining people, as one of the main causes of my start in music production. While I don't purely make music with the purpose of making 100% sure that the audience will definitely love it, that's still in the back of my mind. It's an important part of what I enjoy doing. But I'm not saying that I don't make sure that I like my own music before posting it. I do like my own music before I post it But that liking of my own music tends to deteriorate a bit after posting the song, lol. I guess I try my best to incorporate both entertaining the audience and personality/expression in my songs.

Hm, a tip I haven't seen here yet...

Read through the manuals on what software and hardware you can. You will discover all the corners of your synths and hardware and while you'll just need to do some practicing, you'll know what everything is doing, so it'll just leave you with the task of discovering how it effects the sound.

Take short breaks while mixing or mastering a song. Relieves stress, lets you rest your ears and when you go back to mixing, you kind of see your mix in a fresh, new way. Long breaks (few days long) help as well, as probably said before in this topic.

Listen to your songs casually and take note of things you feel like changing. Move them to your MP3 player of choice and have something to scribble on handy - it's that simple.

Sing riffs, melodic lines or lyrics you come up with in your phone's sound recorder.

(FL Users) If you want to recreate sounds as closley as to the original track as possible, make sure you right click on your tempo, hit "Half-speed", find the notes, and youre done!

Learn the rules of music before you break them. That way, you know when you are breaking them and why.

When recording vocals, have the vocal melody played by some other instrument, then sing along to it.

This is the worst advice I would ever imagine. My drums are usually 3 different samples layered and all EQed differently or they are synthesized from scratch using FLStudio's drumaxx or plain Sytrus.

My advice:

Highpass every synth at 110Hz and make separate sub bass synth which is just a plain sine wave. This applies to all electronic dance music, just look at how professionally mastered track's waveform look like and try to replicate that.

He never said you couldn't process them at all, just that it's better to start with something good and work from there than to start with sub-par samples and try to make them sound good by processing the shit out of them. I've heard really successful producers give the same advice.

Ever heard that analogy about polishing a turd?

If you can't tell where the drop is by looking at the waveform, you're overcompressing.

(Or using sub bass before the drop, which is equally sinful)
