Literally the only thing it can't do is FM, but for that we have Sytrus/FM8.

I don't understand the point of FM if you've got talent in subtractive, with which you can get nearly the same sounds perhaps with a little effort. Could someone enlighten me to why many find FM attractive?

FM is great for all sorts of stuff, although I mostly use it for squelchy talking basses and stuff, SeamlessR style. It takes a lot of getting used to because it's very very easy to accidentally make some really bad sounds with it. Often times just changing one operator by 1% could completely change the whole sound.
I know most people use it for synthesizing drums, but I've never been able to get very good at that myself.

I've actually kinda forgotten how to use subtractive synths because I always use additive or FM now... The nice thing about Sytrus though is that you can use it like a 6-oscillator subtractive synth if you want to.
Sytrus also has RM synthesis available, and all the operators are made with an additive engine (like Harmor's oscillators) which means you can do subtractive, FM, and RM synthesis all in a single synth, and all the operators are made with additive stuff.
Producing mediocre drum and bass since 2012.
Stuff I use: FL Studio 12, Harmor, Sytrus, Maximus, Akai MPK Mini, Numark Mixtrack

OK so apparently there's a synth shop in my city with crazy amounts of old stuff, including a Korg Monopoly
which I've got my eye on.
Has anyone here ever used one/had one, cause I'm thinking about buying it but I'd like to get someone else's opinion on how it sounds + its' versatility before I go ahead and get it.
(The only bad part is that there's no memory so you can't save patches D: )

Nope, it has VCOs and everything, came out in 1981 just before VA synths were started to be produced.

Its got 4 VCO's that operate in combined mono or single VCO/ key pressed (poly).

so um, is it any good?
I do really like it but the lack of memory is pretty annoying.

You're buying an analog synth from before any properly computerised synths existed... And you're worrying about lack of memory?

Also can we get an admin/mod to move this to the hardware sub forum?

Oh man, does this thread belong in the Hardware section? This thread encompasses both hardware and software synths.

My primary concern was that people who have not visited this thread before might be hesitant to participate in the discussion of synths if they have nothing to say about hardware synths, keeping in mind this thread is in the Hardware section of MLR, even though the first post says software and hardware synths are encouraged. Just might be confusing for newcomers. Also, I'm sure it goes without saying that more people on this website who are using synths in their music are using software synths than hardware synths, so it's possible that this thread can dissolve as a result.

Closing this to create seperate synth discussion threads for both software and hardware. All conversations can be continued in their separate sub forums.
