How do you sort your projects?

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

I have a folder for projects with potential, one for things on the backburner, and one for stuff that's finished. Every now and then I go through the backburner folder to see if I can salvage anything from it, but usually not. I also have shortcuts on my start menu for projects I really want to finish.

I've only even not finished one song. Other than that, I'll occasionally do goofy projects where I just do quick compositions with some sound design just to practice composition, sound design, structuring and mixing that I'll just save into a goofy projects folder.

Sorted in folders by Genre, and then in those separated by Complete and WIP. Then I have a generic "graveyard" folder for projects I don't think highly of.

In the main projects folder, each project gets its own folder; sequencer project files go there, and I make a "mixdowns" folder there for audio files. I will periodically make a backup of all my projects in a separate place on the hard drive, burn a DVD backup as well, and then empty out the projects folder so things don't get cluttered. I hardly ever revisit old projects.

I've got a folder named "unfinished" with all the projects I've started, but never worked too much on. An intro and a verse, usually. Missing some sexy hook and a chorus to get the ball rolling.
Then I've got this biiiig folder called "scores"
All the little melodies, chord progressions, bass lines, you name it that I've written and never used. I think there's about 160 of them atm....

I am no good at organisation... :I
Spoiler What ah du:
First I have the projects folder that's automatically created ewhen you install fl. There I have a few projects I never loom at. Then I also have my "unfinished" folder and my "finished" folder. I was gonna move my finished projects there, but I rarely get around to it, so that contains only a few finished tracks. The good stuff is in the "unfinished" folder. I have a few projects right there under unfinished, mostly half ass projects, but most are sorted in to folders. Folder names range from genres to "weird" to remixes, to colab partners. It's a hell finding stuff :I since I never move stuff once the project evolves. It might start of in the dubstep folder, but it should maybe be in the breakcore folder, or it starts in the melodical folder, but then I think it should go in the chill folder. Then I make up new folders when the old ones get full. Like my agro folder got big, so I started breakcore and dubstep folders for new projects...

My point is, I usually just work on the projects in the shortcuts in the file menu... and if it was worth continueing it probably won't fall off that list, and if it does it's worth digging for it...

My system is quite unorganised... But I do music to have fun and relax, just to unwind my brain from the expectations put on me in life, and I can't see me working hard to get organised as a fun thing. I remember what's worth remembering, and that's enough for me :)

I have a folder titled "Music Projects"

Inside that, I have folders labelled "Cubase", "FL Studio", and "Studio One". If I make an album, I make a folder there as well. Then, inside the Cubase folder I make a folder for each song, because Cubase's autosave files can clutter up a folder pretty easily.

So basically, a folder for each DAW, and a folder for any albums I'm working on. If it's just a doodle I usually save that to the root Music Projects folder.

Projects:
• _Finished
• <insert album name>
• <insert album2 name>
• <a few more albums>
• Fun
o some loose project files

I'm usually busy with only the projects in the albums; I got C'est La Vie, with a bunch of Trance things long in the work, System Shutdown with some House, Nocturne Of The Firmaments with Hardcore, Speedcore and Frenchcore projects (along with kick templates), Under The Eye for my Ambient Noise things, and so on.
The _Finished folder contains finished projects.
The Fun folder contains joke projects (hey, I'm from the Church Of Lel).

I also leave everything running so I know what I'm working on and what I'm not working on. It's pretty normal for me to have like three Word docs, five Notepad .txts, two Audacity files, three explorer folders, and 20-odd Firefox tabs open.

I rely on ableton's "open recent project" list. It tracks moved and renamed projects automatically on OSX.

I zip finished projects and put them in safe place in triplicate.

Other than that, it's a huge mess.

You organised ppl, I have a question.

Do you move your projects to a folder where they fit once you have a little progress and know where things are heading, or do you know what folder to put it in before you even start the project?

I move the projects. After getting to a certain point, usually after the leads for the chorus are done, I'll move the FLP to a new folder and give it a working title.

In the project folder, I always create a new folder titled "vox" and place the vocal recordings there. Then I have a folder called "Test Exports" where I save the WIP exports.

First, I make stuff in FL, then I determine what genre it is and name the project. If it's either Dubstep, DnB, Jungle, a remix project or some miscellaneous stuff, I put them in the suitable folder.
For the rest, I just put them in this folder.

let me lead you through my folders
There's the main FL "projects folder"
From there, I have "iKira, new, projects from old laptop, experiments/shite"

iKira leads to random iKira WIPs, with the following folders: "We melt at sunset (old abandoned album project from half a year ago)" and "SpectrumCentre" official projects for the album I'm releasing under iKira.

projects from old laptop consists of Silane, Deadmare, random old experiments and anything else I made on my old laptop. Silane and Deadmare have their own folders. So does "post-silane" for everything I made after silane but before I got my new PC.

"new" consists of a few folders too. "one-off projects" for everything I make that's not intended for EPs/albums/community compilations, "community compo projects" for everything I make intended for submission to compilations or charities, "Skybreath" for projects intended for the Skybreath album and "arse" which literally just consists of a project file named "arse" which is a single distorted snare. Because why not.

"experiments/shite" consists of random experiments with different VSTs or effects etc, and FL projects intended for either harsh noise projects or to be used for "Vortex of Crap".

To conclude, I make folders for things that I might use projects for, I.E. albums, charities, experiments, collaberations etc and name them as such.
We breakfast is e

House. Glitch Hop. IDM. Breakbeat. Chillout. Footwork. Lo-fi. Vaporwave. Noise. These are some of the genres I like to completely ruin.
