Favorite Key and Time Signature?

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

4/4 and B minor, C# minor, E# minor, G# minor, A major. Can't decide. :P

Hard mode: 8/8

no seriously, I like off-beat accentuation at times :| The song in my sig is: three eights, two, two, one; repeat, starting at like 1:20 in.

...okay I kinda like 5/4, 10/8, 9/8, 6/8 but I've yet to come up with anything decent in these.
oops I dropped the bass

Well, I typically compose in 4/4. However, I might start working more with 5/4 after one of the last things I did.
As for key, I always seem to gravitate towards Eb major. It just feels the best under my hands these days. Plus it's the key I have the best vocal range in (not that I have any intention of ever adding vocals).

I like 6/8 time because I think a lot of Irish music uses it. And sometimes 5/4 (look up The Rap by Secret Garden, one of the best uses of 5/4 time. It's really subtle.)
As for key signatures I always think why bother its just the same thing moved up or down but most of the stuff I write ends up in d major or d minor and I'm not sure why.

B Minor/E Minor just because.

4/4 or 7/8 because all pieces written in 7/8 are incredibly fun to play.

Isn't the whole point of equal temperament that all the keys sound roughly identical, and it's purely a cosmetic difference.

Common time is probably the time I use most, although I have done work in 3/4 or 6/4. 5/4 is really cute, and I've done a song in it, although I also really dig 7/4. It's a really fun thing subdividing odd times and making them flow.

Technically, yes, equal temperance is supposed to do that, but the difference in pitch can cause different (arguably subconscious) psyco and physiological effects. And for many instruments, especially piano, it is impossible to make an actual equal temperment - so there is always a slight amount of tempermence.

So the differences isn't as high as say... playing Bach's preludes in a different key on a well-tempered organ or harpsichord, but each key does retain slight variance in tonal quality.

Hmm. I would have to say that my favorite key is either E minor or F minor. The former because it's fun to compose in, the later because it's fun to improvise in. As for time signatures, definitely either 7/8 or 13/8. I don't tend to stick with meters that long anyways. I once had a song that included all of 1-9/4, 1-17/8, and 3-7/16. And I still didn't find it to be enough.

I normally just compose in 4/4, and I often go with A or C major, or sometimes A minor. I do try to branch out but when I'm just dabbling around my fingers often find themselves in their neck of the woods.

I've been messing around in 5/8 recently and it's hella fun to play in. I also play alot in either A/Amin or F#/F#min depending on what my guitar is tuned to. :3

My absolute favorite time signature has got to be 5/8, because when trying to create interesting grooves for a big crescendo or just trying to create something that sounds frantic or unsure, there's nothing better. For example, this song uses it perfectly at 2:22.

Favorite key is probably Db major because every chord feels a little bit fuller and darker in that key for some reason, especially when you play around the C2 range, and the sevenths sound beautiful which is obviously the most important thing.

I think he definitely means he automatically starts playing in D or F when he feels like doodling on the piano. I always start off with Db major or A major so I kind of understand where he's coming from.

:/

Every note on a scale has its own texture/color/flavor to it. Because every key consists of a different set of notes, each key has its own color to it.

Have you ever noticed, after trans composing a song, that there was a subtle difference to the song? Yes it was a little higher or lower, but its like the song suddenly has a different flavor to it.

Its hard to explain what I mean here, because it really is a subtle thing, but its there.
