Rate My Wubs!

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

The arrangement is good. The kick is decent but the snare needs more presence. Sidechain compressing your kick/snare to the bass works wonders. Your beat should compliment the rhythm of your bassline (or synth whatevr). For example have a listen to the drums here to see what i mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbTpdVSyMCw#t=55

You're going in the right direction, i'd recommend focusing on sound design. Just keep working to make your stuff more beefier. Distortion, compression and EQ are key for this. Overdoing compression and distortion is a bad mistake though which i've done in my older stuff. Getting your sounds good coming from the vst without processing is really important. You cant polish a turd.

DONT FALL TOO DEEP TO THE RABBIT HOLE THOUGH. Lately I have been obsessed about my sound design and it has crippled my creativity. Arrange a song and don't touch the mixer until it's done arrangement wise.

I usually just pick 3-4 I like and screw around with their sequencing. If you guys like it, then that's good cause it means I don't have to do anything, but if it sounds strange/awkward/bad, then plz tell me.

The drums sound really acoustic, and are kinda quiet. It sounds like the basses have some kind of white noise on them? It might be the effect of something being over-distorted, so I'd just check that out if I were you.

I like the layout of it though, just the sound design needs some work.

Thanks a ton guys. I kind of lied though. Besides the sound design, I pretty much sound completely different now. My drums slam through the mix and actually I'm having trouble making punchier basses, since my drums seem to devour everything in sight. (Ok, not really, but I am having trouble finding a good balance between the two) I'll upload something when I feel happy enough with it.

Cool cool! Very filthy sound, also has oriental vibes I think, from that pluck.

Here's my first thing. I opened FL and used a harmor preset to render a basic wub and then went trigger happy in LMMS. I also used a Sytrus preset too. You guys can hate me now... It's also a remix of a collab I worked on. Weird.

I like it, it has an eastern feel to it. Maybe add a little filter modulation to the bass to give it more movement. You can do a lot to sell the Egyptian or worldly or whatever theme your going for. I personally like that kind of style, I think it sounds cool.

I added a few touches if you don't mind.

It's well put together and mixed. I'm guessing 1:19 is where you started the remix of the original song? Because that's where it seems to break off. That modulated sound at 1:40 I think could use more boosting in the lower frequencies, and come compression to bring it up so you can really feel that modulation moving. My two cents anyways. Not really my taste.

It's been months since I sat down to make some bass drops, here's a work in progress.

https://soundcloud.com/ghostxb/urban-ideals-wip-3

I think I was a little too aggressive with the mixing. I may just scrap this and take some of the ideas and use it in a new song. I have so much effects and plug-ins in this project it's practically unsalvageable XD!

Actually, I made the original with a friend of mine, so it's more like a VIPish type thing. I didn't transition anything too lazy omg.
As for your song, that's really neat! I like how it uses different instruments than most "step" songs today. It is a little aggressive in the mixing, mainly the highs being too boosted and not enough mids, but over all it's very listenable and I think worth finishing, even if you decide to make a new one (I know that feel when there are way too many plugins to bother :P)

Loving that complextro feel. :)

But the genre is breakcore! So make those drums PUNCH man! I wouldn't mind quieter basses/synths if you had to compress the drums. That would sound crazy!

This is really, really good though.

Lol the funny thing is I was never really going for a Eastern vibe but now that I think about it that would be really cool, and holy crap! That second part sounds epic! What instrument is that, and where did you get it from? Also, does anyone know where I could find some really ambient Eastern-sounding vocals now that I've decided what I want the track to be? That would be awesome. :)

Loving the synths, but you should definitely compress the drums.

Thanks for listening. Scooping the mids and boosting the highs too much is a bad habbit of mine. I am working on producing a full song for it, but there's still a lot that I need to do with it.

I agree, you need to compress those drums. The synths and that vocoding is great! You have a lot going on, so I think the drums need to be in the front of the mix to help bring the whole thing together. I would also suggest doing some sidechaining.

Glad you like it, i'ts actually just a FM8 preset called Plasma Reader. I compressed and Eq'd it to fit into the mix, then I add a little flang to it to give it space.

Here's another endeavor. I'm starting to get a hang of using Massive.

@Metabrony: The synths are pretty cool, but the drums are so drowned out. Try sidechaining, it will make your mixing life easier XD! The synth and kicks need to make sweet sweet love in order to make effective dubstep babies!

@Bare Back: Great sound design and mixing. I see you did a pretty good job of maintaining the transience of the snare drums. I might suggest doing the same for the kick. Maybe a little boost in the sub frequency range. Take Skrillex's 'Scary Bolly Dub for example.

Also, I would like to remind people that this is a give and take thread. If you want people to take the time to listen to your track, you should give the time to listen to others.

@eery: Like what you got so far. The bass sounds rather weak though. I'd suggest layering a sub synth with a low-pass with it. Maybe even a distorted mid range synth if you want a complex, fat sound.

Wtf my posts haven't been posting lately. Anyways this track is great, that crushed bass sounds awesome. However, you can make your bass even crunchier by giving a HARD boost to your high mids and a bit above that too. You may have to take the frequency away from your drums, but no one will notice or care is they're busy rocking out to the bass.

Re: Rate My Wubs!

@TheOcularInvisible: Pretty good, the bit crushed sound on the 2 & 4 gets a bit repetitive after a while so try changing the sound every now and again. the kick and snare don't stand out enough as well so try layering them (one doing hi to mid and the other doing the low-mid) but overal its pretty dang good, really dark sounding shit and when i was your age i didn't even know how dance music was made so keep it up buddy :)

@mush: the build up to the drop isn't big enough (can't think of the correct term so big will have to do) so just add some risers (that are really simple to make btw) and when the vocals say "dead" cut everything else out then start the drop. now for the drop itself, the bass has got a really cool sound to it but its waaaaay too low, EQ the mid to highs up and finally the drums (kick and snare) have the same problem as TheOcularInvisible's but alot more severe, the kick and snare need to be the most prominent part of the mix so make sure they're the loudest part of the mix and layer them to help achieve a more punchy sound to them

Hope this helps you two

I thought "why not" and tried to do some wubs, my way. Spent two hours on this.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/137 ... bs.wav.mp3

I <3 my synth.

EDIT: Forgot I need to review. Well, after skimming through several pages of this thread I've got an overall impression that people tend to make the wubbiness go for too long, without any breaks. That's like holding a long note on violin — sounds great if it's solo, but doesn't give much space for anything else — needs dynamics and changes to stay interesting while in the mix.

PS: Look, Ma, I made wubs! No massive!

I like dat distortion. Too much stereo for my taste. I'd add lots of filtering (notch) to make it more alive.

ImBeginningToThinkAllDubstepSoundsTheSame ;_;
But from a 'rate my wubs' perspective, i'm liking the setup you got here as far as patterns and drums goes, I think the synth sounds a bit generic/overused but it's a solid build (fills space and isn't too wet or gritty for the track) So good job on that

I think dubstep needs to take a turn for more unique drops/sounds, we've limited ourselves to the really complex wobbles and stuff, but maybe we should take a minimalism approach to it, that's just my thought.

Here we go with my wubs (actually just want opinions on the wubs) I was going for a deadmau5ish synth, really long modulations and changes throughout its playing.
