Your avatars affect your posts

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Your avatars affect your posts

Postby Injustrial » 10 Jan 2014 22:27

This is so irrelevant it's not even funny.....

But are any of you reading what's written in a tone, affected by the user's avatar?
Like, Pyrelight always seems cheerful, Nine Volt seems sarcastic and I constantly read Berri's posts as pure troll posts (Even though I KNOW this is not automatically the case)

Am I just weird here?

Just like that! I know you're Norwegian, and we have absolutely NO sense of humor! But I still can't take you too seriously. That Rarity is just too damn cute!

Also, what the hell are you doing up at this hour?!

I guess I just kinda read everything in my own voice. But because it's my own voice, I'm used to it, and therefore I don't really "hear" text, I see text, plain as day. So none of your avatars really affect how I read your posts.

Let me put it this way: I see your avatar, I imagine a legit pony or whatever typing on a keyboard somewhere. Even for you Injustrial, you are the pony in your YouTube channel avatar. It's more fun to think of it that way.

Kind of disappointing when people change their avatars though (looking at you eery, who will forever be a wacky Sweetie Belle), and when someone has no pony-related avatars, I leer at the screen *cough Mr. Bigglesworth cough*

So, other than a small feeling of great anger at those who have no pony avatars, nah, avatars are really negligible next to the content within each of that person's posts. However, you might just be making the correlations because people tend to pick avatars that more or less represent some facet of their personality.

I don't always do this, but I occasionally do. Although ever since I changed my avatar, I can't help but think that I come across as explaining something in a casual manner, which I usually do, so it works out for me.

My status usually reflects my general mood at the time.
Others' avatars surely do affect how I read the posts attached to them, except that I've learned to ignore some because some piss me off when I read it as if it's the avatar's speaking. Not gonna name examples though, you guys just keep your avatars.

Like I'm feeling particularly giddy last time around. Good stuff happening, great talks with friends, so my avatar represents my not having fear for getting hurt or sad. With cuteness.

I feel kinda bad cause i have avatars turned off cause i mostly MLR from work. When i log off (or it obnoxiously logs me off after an hour) i am thrust into a world of colorful pony avatars with personality.

I don't really read your posts in your guess' avatar's voices, but I identify most of you by them. Like I automatically assume freewave looks like a chill genderbent Vinyl Scratch, and that Nine Volt is actually Nine Volt.

Though all of these pale to one case. On another forum I was on there was one kid who had a linux penguin as their avatar for FOUR YEARS without any change. He never posted a picture of what he looked like in all that time or told us his real name so when some of us finally met him at a convention it took us the entire weekend to start calling him by his real name without thinking about a penguin.

I would peg you as "conductor who doesn't hesitate to take command of the stage but is a very happy and boisterous individual when not focused on some sort of music endeavor."
