Showing off my new system because I'm a loser

Postby senntenial » 30 Dec 2013 00:59

So I spent the last few days carting myself back and forth from Microcenter. This is the first build I've ever done and it was tons of fun. I only have pictures of the outside atm but that's all that's really needed.

I got a really really sexy nxzt h230 case which is amazingly silent.
Image

On the inside I have -
- Intel i7 4770k
- Asrock z87 Extreme4 (I still know nothing about motherboards)
- basic psu and memory shit
- AMD 7790 GPU

But the i7 in here is CRAZY. Like... In blender it renders simple things instantly, and when I'm using After FX it previews frames at near real time opposed to my laptop that does nearly a frame a second.

I haven't tried it with FL Studio yet, but the demo projects are getting around 20% CPU usage which is pretty awesome when I remember I used to get something like 60-80% on my old computer.

I still love the case more than anything, though.

Moving up to a better PC is absolutely brilliant when you do music. Like...my laptop had trouble with the start menu and towards October last year could barely even run a drum pattern without glitching out like crazy. Then I moved to my current one and I could suddenly DO stuff :D It was great

Very nice. How much did you spend? If you don't mind me asking, that is. I actually really love building computers and am building one for a co-worker some time soon and one for my grandparents p.soon as well. I also built a gaming computer for the shits n giggles so that I could sell it. Hasn't sold yet, but that's ok.

Yeah, it actually works pretty well with most games that I have, but I'm a big fan of Planetside 2 and it runs terribly on the computer, so I think when I get the money I'm going to upgrade to an Nvidia 660.

Facade wrote:Very nice. How much did you spend?

Since this was more or less a computer for college, my dad helped me out on some of the costs. I also scavenged some parts, but I'll post what was altogether with tax. I got a lot of deals since Microcenter was still on holiday sale.

NZXT Case: ~ $75
Intel i7 4770k: ~ $250
AMD Sapphire 7790 OC: ~ $110
Asrock Mobo: ~ $80
HDD & CD Drive: Scavenged (But I have 2 512 gig drives and the CD thing is old so I wanna guess it would go around $70 together)
Corsair CX600M Power Supply: ~ $60
8 Gigs Ram: $80

So about $700 for the whole thing. I already had a Wifi adapter and keyboard and stuff too.

I actually started building this computer because I attempted to fix an older one when i just thought it needed a new video card. I wasn't planning on making a big investment and I didn't have that much cash then so I bought a pretty cheap card. Still, it runs everything besides Planetside 2 and CoD series stuff really well so I won't mind having it until I upgrade.

There was some fire in a factory that drove up RAM prices a ton

For the price of the GTX 660 you're looking at replacing the 7790 with, you could get a 7870GHz Edition, which performs better. Just a tip :)

this and if you absolutely have to go with nvidia for what ever reason save up 40-50$ more and just get a gtx 760 as it will last longer and run better

I've just had a lot of trouble with AMD's deplorable drivers, especially when I might be running a Linux OS later on. Also nvidia usually seems to fare a lot better with workstation application stuff like Maya n shiz

Be sure that when you build a new system or upgrade the RAM on this system you get the Corsair Elite Dominator Advanced Professional G.Skill Overkill Insanity Ripjaw 4gb ddr3-1033 quad-channel set. Totally the best, it'll improve your gaming performance.

Lel, catch phrases.
