What recurring elements do you notice in your music?

Postby ChocolateChicken » 31 Jul 2013 01:26

What recurring themes and features do you notice in your own music?

I thought this would be an interesting question to ask everyone.

Drums tend to be too quiet.
Chords are played over a bar/bar/bar/half bar/half bar.
Dotted quarter, dotted quarter, quarter note patterns are frequently used (or dotted eighth notes).

I use lots of strings.

I try to make dubstep yet I'm clearly more comfortable with breaks and drum and bass.

idk could just be me liking the fact that breaks are different from my norm.

Well, I like to believe that my theme "less is more" is a recurring element in most of my music.
Don't really know about what else.

Arpeggios, I abuse them.
Dotted eighths, I abuse them.
Sidechain (and not in the mixing sense), I abuse it.
Simplicity, my music consists of it.
Sound Design, weak as hell.

I kind of want to do what Camo & Krooked and ShockOne do, and make their music very complex, with a lot of FX, melodies, transitions, etc. ShockOne does an amazing job at chord progression and I definitely want to go down that path, but *sigh*, I can never seem to break from the little melody I start off with for the longest of times.

And I guess the obvious one. I only make Drum & Bass, I have absolutely zero interest in any other genre other then Drum & Bass.

Well among my wip's, moombahcore is my main genre.
The problem is that I'm not doing anything inventive with it, but I'm working on that.

I abuse triplets, breakbeats, and occasionally reverb. I tend to rely too heavily on sweeps, builds, and samples to transition to other parts of a song.

Not sure what else.

I almost always either compose in A, D, or C minor (with F major thrown in rarely), I rarely do anything other than that.

Also, I tend to always build into the song rather than just hitting the ground running with it.

Tons of chip, tons of distorted bass, tons of breakbeats. That's me in a nutshell.

I think I found a nice balance between chiptune and drum n bass, the chip provides the melody while the bass and drums provides the meat n potatoes of the song.

Basically all my music is that with varying levels of chiptuneyness and dnb-ness.

My remixes, however, are never too good. I'm just not to experienced with them and need to practice more.

I have about 6 different basses that I use all the time, and haven't spent much time trying to come up with new ones.
I also usually compose in A minor or E minor. (Which makes DJing easy but makes all my stuff have similar emotion)
I usually use the same few drum samples, drum patterns, etc.
And I master most of my tracks the same way rather than mastering each track differently to fit the sounds better.
Producing mediocre drum and bass since 2012.
Stuff I use: FL Studio 12, Harmor, Sytrus, Maximus, Akai MPK Mini, Numark Mixtrack

Oh, and when I was using LMMS (which is all of my uploaded music so far), I also used basically the same supersaw in nearly all my songs.

-Always in the keys of C, C#, D, and F
-Tempo changes, I have at least one major one with a ton of modulation throughout the entire thing
-Not really sure if this fits, but in my daw I often place key changes where it would be acceptable just to have sharps or flats
-Everything is orchestral, although I experiment with other stuff

I'm dependent on sweeps to help transition my between sections in my tracks.
I use saw waves FAR too much.
Filters, filters and more filters.
I use relatively same-y drum samples, and can't synthesise drums for my life.
Overuse and chopping of the same drum break (it's too good though asdgahfdsf)

Arp spam.
Noise sweep spam.
Saw wave spam.

I also tend to use the same or very similar leads almost every time. My leads are just all very samey (although I do quite like them).

Acoustic nylon is one instrument I use a lot.

Lack of claps, hi hats, splashes, an good transitions.

Simple melody design. Also, short melodies with limited variation.

Lack of song structure

Repetative-ness

I'll often have several ideas for one song and struggle to fit them all together well.
I always seem to find room for strings and/or piano.
Time signatures have varied a bit recently, but I haven't finished any of those songs yet.
I write far too much in D minor.
There tends to be harmonic minor bits in those.
Everything I write in 12/8 tends to be at a similar tempo.

Tend to use presets in the mixer when lazy
Build up with songs rather than hit the ground running
Use samples more often than I should
I'm not 100% sure what else
I love making music, but I don't have a genre I stick to. I just want to make music, so if you want to hit me up for a collab, go right ahead!

80% of my chords are sevenths / ninths
Which might sound jazzy but it's really not

Also 100% of my songs are DnB
95% of my basses use Massive
Camel Phat / Camel Crusher & Ozone 5 abuser (Got this tip from a DnB producer called Audio, pretty neat)
