Its probably the ipod earbuds; apple in-ear headphones start to low pass at 10kHz and have weird peaks in the mid-high range with recessed mids.
I'd mix for your ATH-M50's. One of the problems with working on (or even listening to music on) good headphones is it makes it REALLY hard to enjoy music on lower quality when you loose a lot of frequency response. People that never have used them before usually don't realize what they are missing, and may think your song sounds just fine.
Thanks for the help. Still, I find it rather strange that other artists' songs sound good on my earbuds and my actual headphones but the (admittedly rather few) songs I've listened to on the earbuds just aren't up to par despite sounding good in my ATH-M50s. Perhaps it's because those other artists' tracks are professionally mixed and mastered.
Also, I suppose I should feel lucky I've never experienced the problem you mentioned at the end there. While I've had good headphones for almost a year and a half now, I have no problem listening to music on my earbuds (I use them all the time waiting for the bus, on the bus, before first period, after last period, etc). I was aware of the phenomenon beforehand and tried to avoid it as best I could (despite the nature of it making it rather difficult to avoid) and evidently must have done a fairly good job. Or maybe it's because I'm just not an audiophile or an 'audio purist' with regards to format or bitrate or anything like that.
