You guys NEED to check this out.

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

You guys NEED to check this out.

In case you haven't seen it before:

http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

BAM. I've been browsing this for literally hours. It's really mind blowing to see how the genres cross and evolve over time. I also did a game where I gain a point every time I knew a track. My current score is like 5.

And if you guys want to go even FURTHER,

http://furia.com/misc/engenremap.html

This one is much, much, less accurate, as it is procedurally generated, but just look at the genre count!

I don't really expect this to turn into a discussion, but I wanted to show you all this. :D

You must be from 2003. Welcome to a decade later.

In other news, Ishkur needs to get off his lazy ass and finish v3.0. I really want to see him tear dubstep a huge new asshole. Also deadmau5.

Sounds awesome. I wouldn't doubt he's working on it as we speak.

Thank you soooo, soooooooooo much for noticing that first site! More music to add to my collection :P seriously, I'm stuck at Classic House. I know the sound (for it sounds much like Deep House).

I'm gonna be up here for a few days non-stop prolly.

EDIT - :D I found my favorite song ever!
OVERDRIVE (nr. 3 at Dutch Trance)!!! And he's not even Dutch xD

EDIT2 - omg, I Like Chopin is there!

EDIT3 - okay nevermind me, a lot of my favorites are in here.

EDIT4 - lel. 4th edit. Anyways. This guide has got me addicted to Monolake. Thanks again.

Really, only four of the guys there are Dutch. Benno De Goeij, Piet Bervoets, Ferry Corsten and Ashkan Fardost. The rest are German, Israeli and Czech.

It's important to also remember that Dutch Trance is typically not considered a genre. Overdrive is Hard Trance, Exhale is Tech Trance, just going by instrumentation, Touched by the Sun is Ibiza. What connects them is that Ishkur wanted to specifically call out artists with absurdly long breakdowns in their tracks for (in his mind) perverting the notion of trance, and he wanted to blame Ferry Corsten for the development, so he called it Dutch. The tracks in there actually cover a range of genres.

I was also really blown when I read Dutch Trance.
I wonder why Ishkur hates long breakdowns so...

Haha Eurobeat. Love it!

Also, you've gotta love Ishkur's opinionated rants on each genre. Even if you don't agree with them, *coughanthem/epic/dutchtrancewhichisactuallyreallyawesomecough* they're still so much fun to read.

The whole jungle section is fucked up though. I don't mind Ishkur hating on (2-step)drum and bass or the tracks he put in there, but the genealogy he uses makes no sense for the most part and seems kind of imaginary. Dnb subgenres were always a bit all over the place, but you can do better than that!
ALSO, he doesn't understand what the word 'progressive' means in edm.
Apart from that, fun site.

Thing to keep in mind is that while Ishkur's site is pretty out of date (an update even by someone else would be fantastic) it was also a bit off-the-cuff. A lot of the genres he references may not REALLY exist in terms of other using those genre names, sometimes the picks are off, and a lot of his descriptions are basically jokes and pretty opinionated. That's not to say that it's not a very impressive site and that a lot of it IS correct in some fashion. He does a better job of visually showing how EDM truly is a genre tree that branches out into many tiny subgenres then about anyone and of course the interactive flash layout and track embeds are fantastic.

Speaking of I really have to update my list which sorta does the same thing but in a less visually pleasing manner. So many of those ytubes died and those are awful to edit when every single video emvbed pops up in your browser in one shot. Gah. At least the RYM Box Set doesn't have to deal with embeds and is a bit more up to date with genres from the last decade.
