Prog and Post-Rock in the FIM community.

We all love it, otherwise it's unlikely you'd be here. Talk about the show and the fanbase surrounding it. Brony music discussions encouraged.

Prog and Post-Rock in the FIM community.

Postby Freewave » 24 Feb 2014 14:56

So after we did an industrial music spotlight for FIM Music we've been requested to cover prog (rock) and post-rock as well.

We've been recommended Cherax Destructor, And the Rainfall, Tarby, HeyLasFas, Cyril, and Kreuhn Pony. We'd love to get examples from these guys of examples of both or either and any other musician that's trying one or the other.

Crazyoatmeal3 as well.

Prog:

Post Rock:

If prog-metal is open as well, Canapplejack should definately be included, as his style is based around progressive metal with elements of post-rock. He might have said he probably isn't going to make anymore pony music, but he still has his pony music up and hasn't denounced it or anything, so he's fair game.

Gotten some further recommendations:

Cherax:

"metroponytan hasn’t done anything in a long while, but he made some excellent post-rock covers of show songs - http://www.youtube.com/user/metroponytan

- Vivix does more shoegaze-inspired stuff http://youtube.com/user/VivixPony/

- Meletric’s Last Rays is one of my favourite fandom songs and is pure post-rock bliss http://youtu.be/yT2Fad5mEGY

- Light Veins (another Sydney ponybro) delves into both prog- and post-rock http://youtube.com/channel/UCJiWIVcVGpwJCM31LVkQh3A

- and Seventh Element’s IDM tracks (eg. At Twilight’s Break, Everything Will Be Just Fine) have a very noticable post-rock flavour to them http://www.youtube.com/user/seventhelementmusic

Cyril
"Secret Metal? L-Train? Or is that not proggy enough. Would some of Pinkieguy’s stuff fall under prog-metal? (good question, will have to check all 3)"

Tarby:
"Pinkey Guy maybe? I’d suggest Vafrous Coyote, but he hasn’t really done anything in a while :/"

Mathematicus
Light Veins has been recommended: http://www.youtube.com/user/Ti88les

Secret Metal does all sorts of metal, but I think he has made more prog metal than any other subgenre with two very different progressive metal songs. L-train's music is mainly symphonic metal, but I know he has a prog-metal band, and I think he sometimes goes into the realm of prog with his pony music as well. He just released a mini-rock opera, so that's something. Pinkie Guy definitely has quite a bit of stuff in the realm of prog metal, but for some reason his channel is down, so I'd be cautious about including him without talking to him about that first. Oh, Cyril himself has some prog songs on his latest album, forgot about that. Doesn't Mathematicus also have some prog music, like that one cupcakes song with Dr Dycer? Dr Dycer cites Coheed and Cambria as his main influence, and they do progressive rock of sorts, but I'm not sure if I can group his music with prog. As for Vafrous Coyote, he's made of songs in all sorts of styles, I'm not sure if he's actually made a straight prog rock song, but I think he'd average out to prog. "For Luna" is progressive metal. I'm not really familiar with any of the other musician's music, but since this is prog/post-rock the post-rock musicians need to have some overlap with prog. The connections with IDM/Post-Rock and prog are clear, but some other music with post rock elements, like Time Babie's shoegaze, are clearly not in anyway related to prog, and shouldn't be included with such a list.

Another prog metal musician would be EpiPony, who does a lot of heavy djenty stuff. I know there are some other bronies making djent, but I can't think of any right now.

Okay, I'd definitely include Light Veins, and not include Vivix (not saying he is bad, just that he doesn't fit the theme, not close enough to prog/post rock), not sure about the others.
