Mane 6's Favorite Metal Subgenres

Postby ghelded_kultz » 26 Nov 2012 03:58

Ok, this is super random, but I was thinking about what subgenre of Heavy Metal best fits each pony in the mane 6, and with the exception of Pinkie Pie I came up with one for each, which is the first one in each row displayed below. Matt then pointed out Glam might best suite Pinkie Pie, and Symphonic might best suite Rarity, so I did some rearranging, but then decided just to give each pony three genres and came up with this:

Applejack: Sludge/Groove/Folk

Rarity: Glam/Symphonic/Gothic

Rainbow Dash: Thrash/Groove/Power

Pinkie Pie: Industrial/Glam/Power

Fluttershy: Power/Symphonic/Folk

Twilight Sparkle: Progressive/Symphonic/Alternative

Notice how the most Extreme I get is Thrash or Sludge Metal. Maybe one of the ponies is into Death Metal, but I'm not even bothering with that.

So anyway, if you like want to compose a series of fitting Metal themes for each pony you might want to look at this, though at Ghelded Kultz fitting themes is the last thing we would do.

I disagree on the notion of who Pinkamena is. Pinkamena is afterall just Pinkie Pie. If by Pinkamena you are referring to Pinkie Pie while in the state she was in in Party of One, then she is depressive, so I say the three most fitting subgenres genres would be Doom, Black, and Technical Death Metal. However if you want a cupcaked themed piece Grindcore, Death Metal, and Black Metal would all work.

Those would be my guesses, anyway. Rarity might rather be "The Spirit Carries On" by Dream Theater, but people here already know them and I wanted to introduce people to new music. (Except Tool. I just put that there because it seemed fitting, not to introduce anyone to them. I know you are already familiar with Tool, whether you are a fan or not.)

Twilight will listen to anything. She'd probably put more thought into analyzing your garage band's songs than you did. I do think she'd be particularly interested in bands like Iron Maiden who take a lot from literature though...

Fluttershy will only like the ballads (but not the ones that get too intense).

AJ used to listen to a lot of rock n' roll, and even delved into stuff like early Deep Purple. Ask her these days though, and she'll firmly deny the merit of anything sporting distorted guitars, "it just ain't natural."

Rarity? Listen to metal? Perish the thought! I mean, really, how brutish, how vulgar!

Even if Rainbow Dash is the hardest, baddest mother-shut-yo-mouth in all of Equestria, she's still a pony so nothing too crazy. She totally lives out her epic fantasies while listening to groups like Blind Guardian or Dragonforce or wutevs though.

Pinkie Pie listens to weird math metal and tech deth and whatever funky shit because it's FUN(?) ! She also totally loves those jazzy sections that prog groups like to break out into, and we will argue about how dumb they are forever, but she will keep telling me how they're just "SO AWESOME!!!". Gosh, shut up Pinkie.

Somehow that actually sort of makes sense.

Applejack:

Reason: Very sludgy, southern, in the dirt metal music, perfectly fitting a very southern, in the dirt farm pony.

Rarity:

Reason: Very elegant and symphonic, yet has that hard edge that'd appeal to someone with the personality of Rarity.

Fluttershy:

Reason: Ethereal and kind of fairy tale-esq, very much the kind of music Fluttershy would listen to in general, not just metal.

Rainbow Dash:

Reason: Balls out, neck breaking thrash to go with a non-stop, restless Pegasus.

Twilight:

Reason: Based heavily in literature, the lyrics would keep Twilight's attention alone, not to mention the very elaborate music to go with said lyrics.

Pinkie Pie:

Reason: Off the wall technical and kind of batshit insane while still remaining within a common sensibility (in the case of the song, common time). Perfect for Pinkie, what with her being off the wall and kind of batshit insane while still retaining her common sense and not being completely off the deep end.

Y'know, this kind of does make me want to write a southern-style stoner/sludge doom song for Applejack.

AJ: probably something influenced by southern rock or bluesy (early Sabbath). And groups like Clutch. Not the most metal, but then, AJ is country.

Rarity: Operatic & female fronted symphonic metal. Therion, Epica, After Forever, Nightwish, Haggard, Within Temptation, Delain, etc.

Fluttershy: ambient symphonic, like Aesma Daeva. Maybe some doom. Anything louder/faster would scare her.

Rainbow Dash: 80's hair metal & thrash. All flash and speed.

Pinkie Pie: folk metal, pirate metal, hair metal. Basically everyone that sings about partying. And Motörhead.

Twilight: Progressive metal for the technical wankery factor. Bands that explore historical (Iron Maiden) and literary (Battlelore, Blind Guardian) aspects.

Good. Now go get Scenes From a Memory and listen to it every day for the next month, because you know that's what you want to do.

Yay, here's my favorite band. I'm gonna learn the Dance of Eternity on drums...
I'll post a video when I will be able to play it correctly.

Also : I love every single album they did. The first one are amazing, the last one is a completely different style, but as much awesome.

Well. Here's a music for Twily : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPfJlsraGec

Wow, this is hilarious :D
There isn't much more I can add except for Sonata Arctica for Fluttershy

Oh, and maybe Princess Luna could be a total goth and listen to Cradle of Filth. I can actually imagine all the ponies listening to some sort of metal, except for Applejack. I have no clue why. Maybethis, but it's hardly metal.

I'll just poop out some of my favorite metal bands.

Rainbow Dashie

Fluttershy

Rarity

Twilight Sparkle haha nerdy metal pony

That leaves Pinkie Pie. I have no clue as to what sort of music she would enjoy. Possibly like Korpiklaani because their songs are all about getting drunk and things like that.

Or Alestorm, because pirates like to party too.
