Massive: Chomping/Throat effect.. how do?

Postby jubian » 20 Nov 2011 06:16

Hey guys,

I've heard this awesome synth used in various locations, but have been unable to reproduce it. PinkieGuy told me something about formant filters, but I'm not exactly sure what he means by it.

Examples of said technique:

Time: 1:22

Time: 1:22 (coincidence)

It's the sound that sounds like "argh"; it's hard to describe.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

I use Z3TA+ but the same thing is about all the formant filters.

A formant Filter is basically a filter/EQ that simulates the way human voice is modulated in throat/mouth by lowering some frequencies and making other ones louder. If massive has a formant filter, apply. If not, find another synth, or get a filter vst that has the formant ability

Downsampling is also a standard way of getting that vocal effect, most bitcrushers have a downsampling parameter.

What I did here was get a standard Saw wave, modulated the cutoff of a Lowpass filter with the resonance set half way, and put it through a bitcrusher with the downsampling amount decreasing over time

So the chain was Wave>Filter>Downsampler. Hope this gives you a few ideas.

This is perfect! Instead of Bitcrush I used Sample & Hold, then slapped on a lowpass, comb and classic tube. Thanks, man!

I found a few presets in some native effect plugins in FL the other day called 'AAAAAAAAA' and 'EEEEEEEEEE' that pretty much morphed a sound to make it sound like it's and autotuned exclamation.

Forgot which plugin it was though, I'll get back to it tomorrow.

Downsamplers give you a sort of bitcrushed 8 bit sound, it's used a lot in this type of music but in this particular song I think he might be using something like the talkbox feature in FM8, it makes some great voice-like movements.
Warning: May cause rapid chest hair growth.
