In need of constructive criticism

Postby Electric Velocity » 26 Mar 2013 13:20

I'm looking for people to comment their opinions on my songs so I can improve. Keep in mind that I am an amateur who is trying to copy the style of Daft Punk. Please don't comment anything like "it's too repetitive" because that's what I am trying to do. I need advice on how I do my filters, mixing, and overall feeling of the track. http://soundcloud.com/electric-velocity

I will give you one piece of advice. Don't try to copy anyone's style. If you try to sound just like someone else, then you will only end up sounding like a bad copy of them.

While I agree with the general sentiment that it's a good thing to have one's own sound, I don't think pointedly not imitating is the way to go about it. You can learn a lot from trying (and failing) to imitate the work of others. You learn how they achieve certain effects and mixdown levels.

So do yourself a favor and imitate others from time to time, if not in your completed works, then at least in studies.

I disagree with that. I've followed the idea of 'Imitate, assimilate, innovate'. Meaning you would imitate the style of the artists that influence you to help you better understand what they're doing that gives their music that special something. Then you would add your own personality to it.
