Releasing previously unreleased tracks?

Postby Mundius » 02 Dec 2012 11:37

Simply put, what do you think of people releasing their previously unreleased tracks?

I'm fine with it as long as it's free for everyone- I just like free stuff and unreleased tracks = awesome free stuff.

I don't quite understand.

If you're talking about tracks that they completed but didn't release for a while, then yeah i suppose it's cool.

It's absolutely not okay. I'm completely opposed to this kind of behaviour, and I personally find it shocking that people still have the audacity to even mention it.

Yeah, they make a track, decide not to release it, they look at it months/years later, and then decide- why not?

If they gave it a touch-up and what not to reflect how their skills have developed, then yeah, I don't care.

I agree with Thyral on this one. It is disgusting to see an artist be satisfied enough with his older work to release it again.

What Munduis is trying to say is...

An artist makes a jammin' track, but after he's finished it, decides that he doesn't like it as much anymore, doesn't release it, and moves on, but keeps all the files. Some time passes, and as he's browsing files he comes across the song, and decides that he likes it again, so he makes minor improvements and releases the song.

What is your opinion over musicians who do something like that.

Alex S has some pretty great unreleased tracks, including a Killers remix and a Justin Beiber remix (shhh don't tell him I said that), and I've heard some of Lavender's unreleased songs in her livestreams before, and those were very good from what I remember.

I think releasing previously unreleased songs is a great idea as long as you actually put work into them and if they are actually good. If the song is good, why not release it? I'm sure any artist's audience would appreciate it as well.

I release a song when it's ready to be released, and if I want to charge for it in an album context, then fine. Just because I made the framework a while ago doesn't mean it should be free, no idea where that notion comes from but it's ridiculous.

Your face.

OP, seriously? You wouldn't even know a track was previously unreleased unless the artist specifically mentioned it. So why would it matter if it was made for free or not?

Because free stuff = easier to get = more popular = new fans. And also that people don't have to pay for it. (I believe the first statement quite hard, and that's why all my music is free)

what's the use of new fans if you never get profit. besides a warm fuzzy feeling that people like your music.

The key is to only sell music once you're really good.

A warm fuzzy feeling that people like your music is a good use of new fans that doesn't involve me getting profit.

OP needs to be more specific. After reading through the posts, I now get what you mean, but when first reading it, I thought:

Doesn't all tracks have a time between they're made, and released? Aren't they 'previously unreleased' tracks during that time? Are we talking about live improvisations?
Constructive criticism is more than welcome. I embrace it.
