You will never be able to copy someones skill set.

Ever.

Practice lots and lots.

piano lessons from someone that can get you started in the right direction, but most importantly practice. I'm sure if someone's dedicated they could to a certain degree get what they need off of youtube. Just lots of practice, keep learning new songs, practice sight reading, always push yourself out of your comfort zone.

I'm a very good pianist, so is Philly Pu, Replacer, d.notive, and who else actually plays the piano? I think Griffinilla is very good even though he says he isn't.

But yeah, to get good at the "craft," all you need to do is play piano a lot. The thing that all of us piano players have in common is that we play piano often, or have been playing for at least a few years, and we have access to a keyboard/piano.

Learning music theory and music notation/sheet music also helps a lot.

It would appear that OP wants to somehow "achieve success" by copying what other piano players do. Us piano players are super famous and successful, after all - more so than Skrillex. So it makes sense that he'd want to copy our skill set.

Quite. Now gentlemen, let us descend to the Hall of the Enlightened and devise further methods of restricting the public's access to piano skills.

This thread confuses me. What success?

Oh, and I'd suggest practicing the piano. Like, for about 10 years minimum.

What a silly thread. :P Just gotta give shout outs to Markarian, Dark Symphony, Ponyvisation, Ivorystrike, Musicalwolfe, Socratic Brony, and GlitchHog who have been known to tickle the ivories too.

Yeah, I've been playing piano for fifteen years. Exactly what they said. Practice, practice, practice. Piano is a difficult instrument to master.

I really should write and perform a piano-only song...

What!? What is this non-sense in the thread!? Ten years of practice... FIFTEEN years of practice!? Hark! It's like I've arrived at a boat full of lawyers describing their craft and upbringing! What bloody non-sense.

I shall reveal once and for all posterity the secrets of the Piano Player™, since you asked so nicely.

All you have to do, is put your hands on the keys, and depress lightly. But not too hard! That'll hurt your dainty little hands (and my, aren't we supposed to protect them now that these hands are going to be that of the pianists?) Just... enough to sound a key.

Voila! You've learned everything a pianist needs to be able to do: depress the damn keys.

... no? Oh c'mon, I was having fun here!

But in all seriosity, getting a teacher would help tremendously in the beginning/initial steps. After that it's all about playing (yes! They call it "playing" the piano for a reason!)... well, if you want to improve your skills in a more efficient manner, then it's a different story. You'll have to ask someone else since I'm not... that technically proficient at playing the piano.

Now, improvisation, that's something I can expound a few tips on. The most important part of improv... is damage control. It's inevitable that you will screw up. The fun part is trying to pretend that the screw up wasn't a screw up at all! A bit of music theory could help you a long way in deciding which keys to press to make the accident seem like a romantic gesture of the wavering heart.

... but it sounds like you're just getting started, so hop behind a piano and begin playing something with my advice (which some teachers might not condone but eh who cares). Learn what C major, F major, G major, and A minor chords are. Learn the C major key (the white keys, really). Now just follow my steps: clunk down a C major chord with your left hand... then a G major... then an A minor... then an F major... and... repeat! Done? Good. Now you can practically do anything with the right hand and it will sound alright, even artistic. Because you've just learned one of the essentials of improvisation:

It's all about the show of confidence

That's all there is. Even if you played the wrongest note cluster ever in the history of music, as long as your hands slide gracefully across the keys and your smile smug as that b*tch down the hall, people will just notice your beautiful and majestic motions, and interpret that into the music.

It's all a show, after all. (Music is really all just for fun~)

... oh boy, here comes the Punitive Council of Pianist Secrets!! Gotta run now, bbbbyyyyeeeee~

Yes, all of this. Also, Philly touched on the subject of confidence, which I agree with.

It doesn't matter if you're playing an incredibly easy song or if you mess up a few times here and there, as long as you can at least pretend to a be confident, graceful, and dare I say it, FIERCE pianist, then you will impress almost everybody who listens to you or watches you play. Although impressing others shouldn't be the goal of playing piano, it is admittedly extremely satisfying. :D

And Philly, please refrain from revealing the ultimate secrets of the International Society of Pianists to outsiders.
