Synthesis Practice Week #3: Kick Drums and Lazers

Postby DJGaugen » 02 Oct 2012 15:42

Part 1 - Kick Drums

Alrighty guys, this week we're gonna focus on those ground destroying kick drums!

Here is an example of a kick I made in NI Massive, then processed in ableton.

For those of you that have absolutely no idea how to make a kick drum, check out this great tutorial by TheDeltaDeep.

Part 2 - Lazers:

This one is extremely easy for people who are just starting synthesis.

I have been thinking of similar ideas, I will try to make some dripping water sounds soon (as easy as they are).

I was contemplating holding sound design contests like once or twice a month, but I'm far too lazy to organize something like that. Still, this is a pretty cool idea, and I might join in sometime. Do you plan on adding more musical sounds to this?

Musical sounds arent a bad idea either, I might just do one musical and non musical sound every week.

I don't think there's need for a new thread every week
One thread is enough, and keeps mlr clean

I'm too mediocre to do the full siren, so here's just the engine sound!

For week #2

Here's my attempt. Everything is in NI Razor, because I am trying to get better at it.

I finally got around to this!

Laser sounds that may not be laser sounds (The last two are my favorites):
http://soundcloud.com/the4thimpulse/sound-effects-lasers

Kick sounds (I am not impressed with these so I put them in my dropbox..)

These were all made on my Korg MS-2000, completely raw sound recorded in ableton, no midi or automation.

Of course! That's my plan.

Though, I think it'll be hard to find things after a while, which is why I'm open to suggestions.

I feel that I may benefit more from this if I knew how others got their sounds to sound so good (even if it's more for self-improvement rather than my improvement). I'm not very good at synthesis at the moment, and some of these I don't even feel like I have a starting place (barring of course the two for this week, which have tutorials to go with them). Then again with different VSTs being used it may be different for everybody... I dunno.

Anyways, here's my terrible laser (if one could call it that): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/83846593/Kind%2 ... 0Lazer.wav

And I'll add a kick later.

It's all about experimentation once you get the whole figuring about what knob does what part down. Most top artists have their own unique and awesome sounds because of the amount of time and effort they put into their "experiments".
