Help for a beginner?

Postby CrimsonEpilogue » 04 Sep 2011 12:57

Greetings, everypony, I have recently decided to start making music, after realizing my uncle and grandfather already have most of the materials for it. They both have the DAWs Reason, Pro Tools, and GarageBand. They both have MIDI keyboards, Is there anything else I should have, and any tips on where to start with songs?

Regards,
Crimson.

It's also good to have some good sound libraries. Otherwise, time to get started, bro! Show us what you come up with, and we'll do our best to help you out and offer feedback :]

You have the most badass relatives, seriously.

Anyway, what genre do you plan on doing? We could probably help you more if we know.

I kinda really like Trance, House, and Drum'N'Bass, and would like to make those kinds of music.

my advice pretty much boils down to four things:
1. make music all the time. never stop.
2. try new things. try everything.
3. learn from others. Try to copy elements of songs you like and adapt it to your own style. (or, at this stage, build it into your style)
4. and have fun. that's important too. :)

but yeah pretty much just jump in and make music. That's the way to go.

My advice:

1) Listen to sci, he is right.
2) Don't be disheartened if you can't get the exact sound you want. This often leads to developing your own sounds, which are always more badass.
3) Samplepacks. Reason's drum samples are a bit wishwashy, but a quick google search can find a lot of free samples with much better sounds.

Oh yeah.

I put a mediafire download up of all the samples I use right now. You can try them out if you want!

If you haven't already, you should add as many of us on Skype as possible, it would be very useful for you if you need to know something real quick.

I can't think of anyone here who wouldn't offer you help as soon as possible.

I think a lot of my music can be loosely described as house, and I'm starting to dabble in drum and bass, so I'd be happy to help you with anything. Apart from working with Reason, I haven't got a cluuueeee~

Few more tips:
Experiment! : even if you don't have an idea for a song, mess around a bit with drum sequences, synths, whatever you use. Even if an idea is not the (classically) best one, it may prove to make a whole new genre, or at least song (dubstep wobble?, overdriving guitars?, vocoders?, sidechained bass?)

If you don't feel completely free using your DAW, try another one: It's been a while 'till I discovered my destiny, that is ableton.

JAM JAM JAM JAM: If you don't know what to do: improvise!

Make sure the songs sounds as good as possibble, but wasting three days of your life just because the drop is not dramatic enough is not what I mean, Rome Wasn't built in a day, y know? But If you Build your rome on a weak base, It won't be as awesome as Rome we know now.
Do A LOT of Music, it helps you get better.
If no one is online to help you, someone might be on IRC.

make music all the time. never stop.

Seriously, This is number one in my opinion on how to get started. I recently started also and doing this will help get you off the ground a shit-ton.

It seems everything else has been covered, but take time out of your day, however long you want and just dedicate it to practicing. You'll learn something new every time!

And yes Skype!
Looking forward to seeing what you can do!

Kyrospawn has tons of quotes from the show available on his Youtube. If you download this and paste his channel into it, you can get ALL the quotes available so far, in mp3 format. ;)

"This" means he's agreeing with you. ;)

Also, no I don't think there is an essential pack thing for pony quotes.
