@Makkon
Depends on what I'm making, be it an electro house track or something hip-hoppy/break-beaty. I have a severe fetish for drums, y'see. My most used methods have to be:
- Layering a cool sounding [but weak] acoustic kick with a bassy electronic kick, like 808s or 909s. EQing is important here.
- Adding a minor, hardly noticeable touch of deep flange to the hihats to give it a trippy spacey sound. Also some sidechain to duck the kicks and snares, giving it some dynamics.
- Often adding a layered clap just a tiny bit before a snare sounds pretty catchy, especially when you have it duck/mute as the snare hits. Timing is important here.
There are many other factors involved that contribute to the final product, e.g. the way you chop the samples, how precise the timing is, etc. But all in all, it's all about the EQ and the mix, those can make the biggest difference.

That's an idea.
