Mixing, mastering, and music theory/terminology. I can't read music, so I'm at a huge disadvantage that I have to do everything by ear.

Mixing, definitely. I'd also like to be better at instrumentation with orchestral stuff.

I'd say the fact that you CAN do it by ear is an advantage by itself. For someone who makes music I'm actually pretty tone-deaf

Also, something I forgot: I'm always struggling to give my music variety. Always feel like it's just so repetitive.

Structure. While I feel I write quality material, a lot of it is very through-composed. Arrivederci could have topped over 10 minutes easily if I had repeated the verses, adding in a lead line etc. I have a bit of a fear of the listener getting bored, I got that a lot when I was starting out, so I've developed this habit of avoiding all and any kinds of repetition.

Structure arrangement. Especially when it comes to so called "bass music" I find it extremely hard to make synths go well together with a beat in drops
I don't have time for fancy signatures.

The solution to this problem, I have found, is liquid dubstep. Just pump some sub-bass into a track, and you're pretty much working with dubstep at that point.

Just don't put too much sub into it, like I do

Am I the only one who can do stupidamericanbroskrillexstep, but not liquid? I don't understand that genre at all.

I like to think that my mixing, mastering, sound design is all good for the most part but thats laregly opinion based. I am really weak when it comes to actually making the song; the notes, chords, and progressions take me a long time too complete to my liking.

Oh yeah.. and dubstep, can't do that.

Geezmus 31 replies in one day? Man, that's pretty crazy.
Anyways I too am terrible at mixing, and I straight up don't master my tracks besides using a soft clipper on the master insert on the mixer.

If you use FL Studio, you might find this guide useful. If you don't, I'm sure you can learn something from it anyway.

Oh God yes, I just take from the school of Renard and throw variations in at proper times to better express the track.

Absolutely love that website; chock full of useful and easy-to-follow tutorials, tips, and tricks.

I suppose my weakest point right now is structuring and arrangement. Mixing and mastering came surprisingly easy after experimenting with some unfinished projects and studying the waveforms of other songs.

I can't nail down a 'signature sound' though, and I'm terrible at adding variation. I suppose with more practice and experience it'll flow smoother, but I've only been attacking music production head-on for a couple of weeks; no doubt that's to be expected.

Sound design, music theory, mixing and mastering, and anything dubstep. I've been told my melodies are half decent but I think its a lie.

Making my tracks more varied. People tell me I have a good sense of flow but my compositions can get stale.

For example:

There is no such thing as professional volume, really. For instance, Porcupine Tree's music is mastered extremely well, but plays at maybe half the volume of what people have come to expect from the Loudness War. To that end, intensive mastering is less necessary if you're good at mixing to begin with (not that you can pass off an unmastered track as completely finished). (Well, mixing and making music that isn't too busy and noisy anyway, which stems from both good composition and good sound design.)

Oh yeah, I'm kind of bad at mixing too
