What is your weakest skill as a producer?

Postby XXDarkShadow79XX » 26 Jun 2012 20:06

Idk I'm pretty bord rite now, so I guess I'll ask a question: in terms of producing music, what are you worst at? I feel stupid cuz I can't put this into words, but here's an example. My weakest skill is writing melodies. I can't write a half decent melody for my life. What about you guys?

Same as you, melodies. I also have trouble with eqing, mastering, and mixing.

Motivation. Aside from being busy as hell during the school year, there's a reason I don't put out nearly as many tracks as I'd like. >.>

That aside, sound design's a pretty weak spot for me right now. I'd love to spend hours and hours adding a gajillion effects, but laziness usually wins out. xD

For me it's definately mixing. I'm slowly getting better, though. All through practise, I guess.

My weakest area would have to be getting inspiration at opportune times

But seriously, melodies. I can improvise chord progressions that I really like, but I can't wrap my head around putting any sort of lead over it :(

Moderate to fast paced melodies. Slow piano melodies, or ambient pad shit is a big yes for me, but everything else makes me cry. Oh, and mixing.

Making anything that isn't happy and/or chill. I've been trying to make something dark and fast-paced for months, with zero success. Sad, especially, is where I struggle.

Melodies are easy for me. I'm surprised at how many of you have trouble with it - no offense meant, of course. As long as I have a general idea of how I want the song to go, I can just hum something out, mimic it on the piano roll, and tweak it until I like it. Unless it's dark or sad or fast-paced.

Dubstep and everthing that has to do with dubstep. Blind, I'm the opposite of you, everthing I usually make is comparable to Silent Hill's music. Dark, and macabrely beautiful.

The solution to this problem, I have found, is liquid dubstep. Just pump some sub-bass into a track, and you're pretty much working with dubstep at that point.

Just don't put too much sub into it, like I do

My weakest skill has to be form. I find it really difficult to make a plan for the whole track and have it make any sense. I also have a lot of trouble with fast music. I'm pretty good with slow, dark, atmospheric stuff.

Quantity. I know I should run by "quality over quantity", but songs that go for 90 seconds aren't going to cut it.

That's the evil mind control at work.

My next song should wipe your memory if everything goes according to plan

edit: But if I can answer this seriously, I would say a few things:

Structure- A lot of my songs are intro/verse/pre/chorus/intro bridge/verse/chorus/break/chorus/outro (same as the intro). I'm not happy with it, but it works. I would love to break out of this and work on structureless songs. It's on the list atm with another piano/string piece.

Instrumentation- I'm just bad at it.

Other stuff like not being able to emulate others arrangement wise, but that's not too bad because I do want my own sound.

Oh, and my mixing/mastering needs work. I'm still happy with what I do though... although I would like to get better at splicing and sampling in general...

Mixing, minimizing repetiveness and smooth transitions.

mixing, eqing, mastering, effects and an urge to make the song more complex resulting in mass delays
