As far as the bought/build hurdy is concerned, I can absolutely see the poetry in a 700$+, hand crafted device. That said, I want me a kaisatsuko:

http://torigoya.main.jp/kaisatsuko_en.html

2 strings, fretless instrument with hurdygurdy wheel on. Stunning sound the fellow gets out of it, too. Obviously, it's not meant to play traditional gurdy tunes, but it's a minimalist stripdown to the point of the drone and the melody string. It's got it's own uses, I think, and it's entirely a different instrument for a different purpose and price range.

Gersh66 wrote:I can sing decently (or so I'm told), played piano for about 10 years (although I never got as good as I would like), and own a way out of tune guitar I hopefully will learn. One thing I really want to learn is the cello, except I don't feel like payin 300 bucks for one.

You can get a beater cello for around 80bux on craigslist. Obviously not ideal, but that's why I have so goddamn many instruments. If you dig it, you can get something better. If not, sell it on craigslist. You'd be surprised at how many people buy decent instruments, and then just dump them when their band/orchestra class dries up. Make their lack of dedication into YOUR pro musicianship.

I've played the french horn (awesome instrument btw), trumpet, mellophone (terrible instrument btw), and trombone in bands. I play the piano but have no real formal training. And that's it!

I'd like to pick up a stringed instrument sometime, that'd be a lot of fun. Either something like a violin or a guitar.

@ JefftheStrider, French horn is awesome! My favorite brass instrument to be sure.
@Derpy Groves, ha! leave it to the Japanese to make something like that lol. That looks kind of a whole lot harder to play than a hurdy gurdy. Mostly because I assume you have to learn finger placement as apposed to the keys on the HG.
Another instrument I wanna pick up is the Balalaika from Russia. I even wrote a preliminary Trixie theme with one. (Although since I didn't have a balalaika sound I used a Ukelele instead. Tremolo strumming was not too pretty.)

One instrument I'd love to pick up but just can never find for an affordable price/quality is the kora

Beautiful sound mixed with an unconventional "interface" so to speak makes this look like a very interesting instrument to play.

Thing is, only real way to get one that doesn't suck or isn't drastically overpriced is to actually go to Africa to pick one up.

Hmm I never thought of Craig's list! I'll have to check that out sometime.

@DerpyHooves That does seem like a really neat instrument.

@ Derpy, That sounds beautiful but looks kinda gnarly in my opinion lol. A Clarsach sounds almost exactly like that.

I've taken piano lessons for 8 years, I started on guitar 2 years ago, I'm a decent drummer for the school band, I'm learning a bit of turntablism, and, my personal favorite, I play the Roland Ax-Synth keytar. I'm gonna get some live performances up on my YT channel sometime.

I don't play the guitar, obviously. What would make you think that?

I have been playing piano for 2 years.

I play some acoustic guitar and piano. I'm a semi professional trumpeter (so if anypony ever needs some trumpets to liven up their piece just shoot me a pm or something), Harmonica (If you can count that as an instrument) and I can play acoustic/electric drums too. I'm also a synth freak too, so if you counted that as an instrument, i can play the synths too!

The only instruments that I've had official training on are the violin and viola. The viola's actually really fun to play (and make jokes about), its C string is something I miss every time I pick up my also awesome electric violin.

I also beatbox and kind of play the harmonica, and if I had a piano or drumset, then I'm fairly certain I could pick those up too. I tried the guitar once, but it wasn't my thing.

Oh my, I didn't see this thread.

Well, first off (and before anybody says it's not an instrument) I play the drums, pretty much every day. I live in a neighbourhood full of the elderly, too; so it's probably a little rude of me.

I also play the guitar, but no matter how hard I try, I fail at chords. Same applies with piano. The only reason I pass at guitar and piano is thanks to a sharp musical ear.

I sing a lot, but only in the car... nobody knows about that. I don't even know if I'm good since the music is always too loud to hear myself.

And now, a shameless plug of myself playing an awesome drum lick near the end of a not-so-awesome song.

Right on Drum cover *nods*
I have never listened to Saosin and it's funny because I used to sell their music at Hot Topic lol. But yeah, I liked the 16th note tom run-thingies.

They aren't that great, but the drums at the end of that song are, which is the only reason I covered it.

I'm not in a band, not any longer. All my band-mates went away to university, and one to Sweden. I stayed home, and I'm trying to form a band with a collection of lazys who won't get their plot into gear.

Ararar.

well that sucks... Can't you look for better/more motivated band members at college?
I remember I tried to form a band after high school but was unsuccessful. Mostly because most of the people around here are into Hip hop and top 40 crap. The only rockers played bass, and in the pop rock style. WTF IS IT w/ POP MUSIC?!?
Anyway, yeah try to find better people lol.

You know what, I think I'll have a scour around. Though, the fact that I stayed home to study in my sleepy town instead of going to a big uni means I have few friends here, and those few friends are kind of musically backwards. If anything I'd be grateful for a pop-rock bass player at this rate.

You're making me itch to be in a band now...

Well I'd love to try out if we were anywhere near each other but alas, fate is not looking nicely upon that.

I'd love to join a band with you. Just think of the distance as a 5560-mile-wide practise room. Our levels might be a bit off, though.

I don't really play anything other than keyboards and sequencers so I'm not exactly rock band material dude. Sorry /=

Lol, drums and Bagpipes are traditional music of Scotland xD. I think they'd be tired of it already.
Aha, nice play or so I hear, but expensive. Is it? O.o
