Updating with epic flute playing! Some of you have already heard this, but here's another video where the multiphonics are more noticable!!
Ian Clarke - "The Great Train Race" (dunno, sometime between 2000-2010)
Ian Clarke - "Zoom Tube" (dunno, sometime between 2000-2010)
If anyone finds out the dates of these, I'd be appreciative...

This is the equivalent of Fractal Music! Although it's not called that at all, the idea of fractals (a pattern within a pattern within a pattern etc) is there!
Per Nørgård - "Voyage into the Golden Screen" Movement II (1968)

I'm a big fan of Czernowin! If I studied under her guidance, that would be a dream come true!

Balls damn, I need to take some time (hell, a whole day!) and listen to all the stuff you post, Dr. D! Seriously. As a composition student, it is shameful that I haven't heard of much of this. And this looks like stuff I'd really like.
Then again, I only started listening to classical music about 2 years ago, perhaps I'll catch up...
SPEAKING OF MODERN CLASSICAL. I decided one of my college solo piano audition pieces ought something interesting like this, so I choose a spectralist piece(Tristan Murail ~ Cloches d'adieu, et un sourire), but I ran into a problem.
What does 3,5"env. mean? What exactly is that line rooted next to the pedal marking for?
The 3, 5" bit means you do that part in the space of 3 to 5 seconds! The weird pedal line I'm guessing means varying degrees of pressure (or lack of) on the pedal... Translating the french as "Reduce the Resonance" this makes sense as decreasing pressure on the pedal as the line ascends and increasing pressure as it descends! So letting the resonance of the open strings die out using the pedal!

Thank you! That's been showing up thoughout the piece.
Oh damn. I have an electronic piano, that'll be hard to practice.
Henri Pousseur: "Prospection" (1953) for three pianos tune 1/6 of a tone apart.
1/6 of a tone apart

Krzysztof Penderecki - “Capriccio for Violin and Orchestra” (1967)
Such a violent piece! This is probably my favourite piece for violin virtuosity…
Try and imagine what the violin line would look like on a score or a piano roll...have fun!

Wow, so much dissonance. I liked it but only thinking of it as some "horror" genre, something that inspires fear and such, otherwise it is not appealing to me, i specially liked polymorphia and threnody
o i dont really understand what Modern classical really is, besides it being an oxymoron, from seeing a lot of dissonance, soundtracks and some that sound pretty classical i cant tell xD
PiercingSight wrote:Now about ALL modern classic. Ever listen to John Powell? Probably already have (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Powell)... here's some of his stuff. I think he deserves almost as much praise as John Williams.
Anyway, the best music written is music written with a purpose (this usually ends up being STs for movies, especially the good ones). I completely agree the modern classical is the best MODERN genre, but I have yet to hear an artist as inspired and as brilliant as artist such as Mozart, Stravinsky, and Debussy (He's mah fav composer) in modern times. You truly can't beat the classics.
Oh, you say that best music is written with purpose, what do you exactly mean by "purpose"? like of for a story or a movie, or like for portraying a certain feelings?
Anyways, i see soundtracks can be posted to, so here goes my bet on this "genre", soundtracks ftw:
Also, Modern Classical from an Atmospheric Death Metal band, isn't it awesome? :3
btw, please dont blame me if im totally off the margin, i really got no idea ^^U.

Dr_Dissonance wrote:You'd think it's an oxymoron because people consider classical as old...but that's not the case at all! It's still a strong genre!
NOTE how I say 'genre' not 'time period'...they're two different things...
Okay, so modern classical is basically any kind of 'art' music written around now...the reason it's such a vagur genre is because of a little movement called Postmodernism! To put it bluntly, Postmodernism started in the 1970's and was basically when everyone went "Screw this, I'm writing what I want to write!" Rather than learning about specific aspects of a time period (like if you learnt about the Baroque period), if you learn about the Modern period (that's what we currently call it, but it'll be renamed when it doesn't become that modern anymore... ) you'll learn about many, MANY genres that art music broke off to...
That's why we have things like this:
Michael Daugherty: "Bizarro" (1993) which is hell funky (love playing this on Audiosurf, nice and casual, but fun to play!)
and then we have things like this:
Arvo Part: "Tabula Rasa" (1977) which is quiet and almost pieceful...Makkon and Pierce might like this!
and then you have things like this:
Brian Ferneyhough: "La Chute D'Icare" (1988) crazy times!
So basically, you can write whatever you want really in this day and age...be thankful for that! That wasn't the case in the past!

Whilst it's important to give music meaning to yourself, it's also important to not go in to music expecting a specific genre, as you'll label it as that, regardless of what it sounds like... Take a listen to the very first video I posted on this thread (the Sinuous Words one)... Now, I listen to that and just enjoy the sounds going around me, I don't give it a 'horror' label, or a 'murky swamp' label...I just enjoy it AS music, not as an accompaniment to something else. Give it a try! Although, now that I've said that, that's what you'll be thinking of!
P.S. Why does firefox keep reroutng me to my youtube page when I enter this thread? BUH!!! EDIT: HOWL! It's because of that failed youtube link, it keeps sending me to youtube for some reason, any chance on fixing it? Cheers!

Lol, sorry, i fixed it, and learnt how to bug threads XD so there it is, tell me if that could be counted? =) And on reply: Yeah, i listened to the songs not as labeling them into something, but what happens is that it dont find them any interesting. The exceptions is when i involve some sort of emotional feeling to the song, like making it into something scary inside my mind, otherwise it is just.... dissonance, at least for me, haha.

That's fair enough! That just boils down to opinion, so if you don't like it, you don't like it! All good!
Giacinto Scelsi - "Maknongan" for Bass Instrument (1976) In this case, the Double Bass...
P.S. yes, that counts as modern classical!

So, this is pretty AWESOME!!! ZOMG there's melodious material in a modern piece! WUT, I thought it was all about the atmosphere or making things sound bad! (totally joking)
