What are the accepted "best" bands it is worth listening to within that genre, apart from them?

Yeah those guys are simply THE originating point for that genre/scene. Started as one band, some friends made a few bands in response, and then it eventually "caught on" as a scene.

Again here's the comp i made which are my favorite songs from the best artists and releases. Some of the bands listed 2 or 3 times are easily top tier (you should know)

Here's that comp on mp3 to listen (again basically an <80 min cd length listen)

Awesome thread! I used to be pretty into a few Wizard Rock bands (I still like the music, but I don't listen to it much anymore).

I think one of the main reasons it's mostly indie/garage-esque bands is because the series is set in the 90's, so whether intentional or subconscious, a lot of the bands wanted to emulate the style of small bands from the 90's. Plus it kind of adds to the nostalgic feeling that Harry Potter has.

I mean seriously, this list is ludicrous: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres

ah yes. Metal is almost as bad as Protestantism in this regard. Almost.

 I ALWAYS GO TOO FAR. I wouldn't have this ridiculous user name if it were otherwise :D

yea, i've always cynically assumed the fanbase was 96% male but its actually more like.....80%?

That said, I stand behind the race and homophobia observations which are, btw, related. Sadly, severe homophobia is ridiculously prevalent among my people. Shit's a Pan-African cultural disease. People always talk about rappers using the word 'faggot' but they don't realize that gay-bashing is practically a SUB-GENRE in Reggae. Ugh.
