What Distortion VST's Would You Recommend?

Postby hottoast16 » 13 Dec 2012 13:42

I'm looking for a good distortion effect for a synth I'm working on but I can't really find one that gets the job done.

I've tried GTR3 but it doesn't work in Ableton as far as I can tell. FL has a decent one called Hardcore, I've tried re-wiring Ableton to FL but can't seem to get the synth to pick up the effect.

Any recommendations for creating distortion effects in Ableton?

The sound I'm going for would be similar the synth that appears in Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy. It starts at 1:46 and continues throughout the song.

Ohmicide is kind of a standard.

Literally everything has already been said. If you wanna go free, CAMELCRUSHER is a sexy beast, along with the powerhouse TRIDIRT. If you're willing to pay, CAMELPHAT is the buffer version of CAMELCRUSHER, OHMICIDE is supposed to be sick, and IZOTOPE TRASH 2 sounds epic.

I have no idea why I wrote the VSTs in all caps.

Ignite Amps have some pretty good free stuff.

I am a big fan of their SHB-1 Bass Tube Amp. I love the sound it gets more than any other distortion I've tried, and almost always put at least a bit on my bass tracks to add a little character. It can add some real beef to even a simple patch.

Camelphat3
Ohmicide
FL also has a few great built in dist plugins, I'm sure same goes for Ableton.

Native Instruments is giving away a new distortion plug-in for free until the end of the year. I haven't used it yet, so I don't know how good it is, but there's no reason you shouldn't pick it up.
