Need help with Dubstep (MASSIVE)

Postby Deathsongx3 » 27 Jan 2012 22:48

Hey guys, I need help. As soon as I start a track, I manage to do everything until the drop, Then i just lose hope and quit Ableton. I try and try but never manage to get a proper dubstep drop.

So if someone could teach me how or post some tutorials, It would be great. Most of the tutorials I see on youtube go wub wub wub wub wub, I want a drop like

Take Omni's Remix for an example

How long have you been using Massive? Most of it is understanding what sounds good in Massive vs what sounds good with the song. Plenty of times in the past I've created an awesome bass in Massive, only to find it doesn't fit the song.

First off (IMO), Performer and Stepper > LFOs. LFOs are for steady wubs, Performers and Steppers are for glitchy bass lines, and with the ability to crossfade and/or switch lines, you can have up to 8 separate Stepper and Performer lines all within one sound.

For some general tips though:
- It's better to use 1 or 2 oscillators max, rather than all 3. Adding more oscillators just adds more tweaking to get the right sound.
- Phase and Ring Mod oscillation is your friend.
- Play around with the built in EQ.
- Remember, your drums go with your bass. A dubstep drop with a standard rock rhythm isn't a dubstep drop. Your drums should be as fluidly changing as your bass, in a way that compliments the bass line.

Listen to this tune, and instead of focusing on the bass, listen to how they do the drums, how they compliment the bass, etc.

Check out these tutorials. The first one is lengthy, but it's AMAZING. Even if you don't want to be Skrillex, you learn so much from that tutorial on just dubstep in general!

The second two is a short series where a guy makes a quick wobble bass in Massive and then walks you through the resampling process.

Dubstep =/= one wub + half speed drums

Dubstep == wub + wub +wub + wub + MORE SYNTHS + Half speed drums. Everything in semi-random order

Thanks for your reply, everyone. It means a lot to me C:

@Navybrony, I've been using it for 2 Months but all I know how to do is make a wubwub sound. I'll play around with performers and steppers, Thanks for the tips.

@Versilaryan, Thanks! I'll check them out!

@bartekko, Will keep that in mind, thanks :p

One thing is reading about how to ride a horse, another thing is actually doing it.

Just keep twiddling those knobs, eventually you'll be savvy with it. It just takes time.
