I believe a common technique for getting a more powerful kick is to layer a 909 style kick, and adding a compressor so it doesn't reverberate as much.

I could be wrong though. I haven't gotten into making hard kicks quite yet.
DAW: Cubase 6.5, Ableton Live 8
Preferred Genre: Industrial/Trance
Hardware: Schecter Diamond Series Bass, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, BP355 Effects Pedal, Keystudio 49K Keyboard, Akai APC40, Korg nanoKEY2 25k Keyboard

909? yes.

but instead of compressor, I think it's overdrive.

Or both. The harder the better. ;)

I think certain VSTs like Ohmicide also help to get that certain kick.

overdrive already works like a compressor, so there's no need to double that effect.

a compressor after overdrive won't do much, and a compressor before overdrive would make the kick sound more static IMHO

Hi there, I'm new here but I kinda now a thing or two about hardstyle kicks.
First off all: Don't layer anything, just use one 909 kick or a kick from Junglist or hydra, otherwise your kick won't sound like one solid sound.
Another thing that I found pretty usefull is to add distortion step by step and allways put a EQ between Distortion effects even if you won't change anything to them directly, later on it gives you mor control about everything.
To get this typical "WROAM" sound in your kick it can be usefull to take the beginning of your kick cut out the middle and crossfade the beginning with the end of your kick where there is less high frequency.
you can also do this with an effect called autofilter but it is not free and it sounds a bit to artificial to me.
Oh, and one last thing: NEVER use sample Hardstyle kicks (most of them are ripped of anyway)!
