Collabs... how do they work?

Postby General Mumble » 02 Jul 2011 19:09

I'm pretty curious, as I have never done a collaboration before, and may never end up doing one but...
How do collaborations work when the only method of communicating is the internet?

Damn it's late, I tried my best to word that well...

Well, I have a good idea how, but it'd be nice to get some info from people who have done it! Info about their experiences on collaborating would be nice! *hint hint people!* :)

I did a collab... it isn't all together yet but I sang rarity parts to one song.

As far as I know, the organizer gets links to the song they want to do, lyrics, and possibly sheet music.

People submit their stuff and we hope it all comes out all gravy?

ex:-----------------------------------------------------------

Let's do Sweetie bells Hush Now Quiet now song. I will be putting this together in audacity.

everypony should sing sweetie bells part, the backup vocals, and play the instruments if they can.

soundcloud to the original song

please send links as I don't want attachments.
unless you want to send in a .aup

It would probably be posted on ponychan and maybe even here.

When I ran Cutie Mark Crusaders... yeah. That just about sums it up. I just started the thread and asked everyone to send in whatever they could. There were a couple of other things we did to make sure it came out all gravy, though:
- We commented on each other's work (Kits recorded drums at least 6 times until we were satisfied  )
- I made sure I could turn out instrumentals where they might have been lacking just in case.
- I took my time laying out all thirty-or-so tracks.

Though I think General Mumble and Dr_Dissonance are talking about instances where 2 or 3 people get together to work on (perhaps write?) something. The closest thing I've done was the Winter Wrap-Up instrumentals, where I messed around with drums and keys while Kits and Bejoty handled the guitars. But then again, we still had the original song as a framework for what we were going to do beforehand :?

EDIT: Accidentally wrote Poowis instead of General Mumble. I have no idea as to why, though.

well about collabs on writing an original song... that is tough seeing as how google docs (to my knowledge) doesn't have a basic sheet music thingy thing. Me and my friend use skype and send .mus files for finale. We comment on eachothers work based on how it sounds and looks on sheet music, but we have never really collaborated.
The best way I could think of doing this is have everyone writing in the same program(s) preferably I'd think, use skype or some other means of easy file transfer and communication (voice communication would be the best option), and make lots of versions.

That's a good point, people would be using different programs... I don't have a clue how well they'd inter-work (for lack of a better word).

last time I 'collabed' on something (it was very informal. my section fell straight through. 2 hour rush. still good fun.)...
I needed to know 2 things: the tempo of the song and the key.
I then just wrote a section for a few bars, said where it was supposed to go, and boom: it slid in place.

repeat for several sections and you'd have a full song, I'm guessing.
(so I say, but I've never actually done a proper cross-DAW collab)

I collaborated twice with a guy using trackers. (i used openmpt, he used fasttracker2)
Basically, one of us started to compose, and when we felt like it was the other's turn or we did enough already, then sent the module file to the other, who did the same thing; we edited each other's notes to make it sound better, and we even deleted parts that sounded subpar.

The second time i and another dude both used FL studio, and shared the project file only, but the procedure was mostly the same.

Difference between the two occasions being: In the first, we both worked in one major style, since we went for a chiptune. In the second instance, it was Synths/Symphonic vs. Noise.

It was a learning experience, regarding the limitations and problems we had; but one thing's true: collabbing with midi/stems is harder than if you both use similar, or the same app. Or, the same samples/isntruments/rexes/vstis/aus/rtas'.

(wow, i didn1t mean to post this long a post, sorry :3)

Funny enough, I thought a collab was as simple as, "Hey dude, I wanna cover/remix CMC but I can't play guitar up to that speed with decent fluidity, help me out?"
"Yeah sure dude, you staying in Bbm?"
"No I'm actually gonna modulate to Bm on the final chorus"
"Oh all right *goes to record* here ya ago."
End of story.
Am I horribly wrong?

It could be that simple. It depends on what you are doing exactly. However if you are both writing the same song, that is a different story.
