Why do people in India love cricket so much?

Guys, I really don't get it — why is there such cult around cricket in India? I see that tickets are sold out in minutes, and the players have fans almost like Hollywood stars. I used to think that football was the number one sport everywhere, and then bam — a billion spectators of the final! Is it purely because of the history of the game or is there something more to it, like a business? Enlighten me, if anyone knows, I'm very interested!

I am from India and I can confirm that we have been growing up with cricket since childhood. All the courtyards are filled with children playing. And the IPL is like a show: favorite actors, commentators, fun.
