For all you Skrillex wannabes out there

Even if you don't want to be Skrillex, this is a pretty informative tutorial, and by far the most accurate reconstruction of his talking basslines I've found. Check it out!

FM8 is <3. It's such a wonderful synth and you can basically make whatever sounds your little heart desires.

It's hard as balls to use, though. It's really easy to make all your synths sound the same if you don't know what you're doing.

FM8 is really great for reeses, but it's mostly about the resampling process.
Frequency split, distort, add slight effects, resample, repeat.
I've gotten very close to the growl in Reptile using that process, as well as z-plane filtering. Billain also said in a Q&A on DOA that he frequently uses z-plane filtering for his basses, and his basses are just downright insane haha.

Here's the article:

GREAT thread if you're looking to make neurofunk dnb or get skrillex-esque bass. Also some great tips in there about general sound design and foley sound design.
Software: Ableton Live 8.2.2, Sylenth1, NI Massive, FM8
Hardware : Macbook Pro, some altec lansing sound system, axiom 61 key midi keyboard, and a ton of power strips

*raises hand* Oh my gosh, I'm in love with that thing. I mean yeah, I find it insanely complex and pretty much need to be led by the hand to get something alright sounding out of it, but holy crap, it's insane. Much love to the Zebra.

ABSYNTH FTW

I've looked at Massive and realized that I was better off rewiring things through Reason, because the Thor is simply better AND so much easier on the CPU. FM8 is just genuinely, utterly frustrating to use... As soon as I get my DAW back I'll check out this tutorial, but I think that FM8 is just genuinely set up in an incredibly, almost DELIBERATLY ridiculous way.

Absynth is cool though, from what I've come up with while playing with it. Generate things, then tweak them, and suddenly you have something REALLY interesting to work with. It's also not as fucking confusing as FM8 or as ridiculously... pretentious as Massive. I don't know, something bothers me about Massive. It just doesn't seem all that great at all to me, and it's much more complex to use than it should be. And it leaves such a ridiculous CPU footprint compared to what I can do for the same thing in Thor or Malstrom in Reason.

FM8 is a beauty. I had originally got Massive, Absynth, and FM8 at the same time, but mainly I just messed with Massive since it was simpler [I plan on taking on FM8 this year].

FM8 isn't set up to be deliberately hard to get. It's a frequency modulation synth, not a subtractive synth like you're used to. It's an entirely different beast, and that's why the interface might be difficult to understand. It's not that difficult to understand how to work it, though it's difficult figuring out how to make it sound like you want it.

Massive /is/ a CPU hog, though. That's the one thing I don't like about it. It's /really/ easy to use, though -- I don't understand why you're having problems with it. >.> It's set up in a way that I understand it far more than I understand synth1. And I LOVE synth1.

No, I promise FM8 is deliberately annoying, or maybe there's just a problem with mine... I'll be thinking that I finally understand some aspect of it, then try to repeat what I did--usually just a relatively simple operation, like messing around with a parameter--and discover that for some reason the synth just isn't being responsive at all to what I'm trying to do. What the hell?!

And for the record, subtractive synths aren't all I use. I'm quite certain that Thor, Malstrom, and Absynth all use different methods of synthesis. I adore the Malstrom, and it's oh so very strange compared to other synths, yet so fun to use! Anyways yes, as soon as I get my computer back and my DAW up and running, I will most certainly check out the FM8 tutorials just to try to figure out the mess that it is.

Are there any other frequency modulation synths out there, out of curosity? FM8 is unfortunately the only one I've ever heard of.

Are your oscillators on? You have to turn them on by right-clicking them before they'll make any sound. And if the oscillators aren't routed to the output, directly or indirectly, they do nothing. I'd have to see what you're doing, though, to actually say anything. >.>

I know Sytrus, one of the FL synths, is an FM synth, but that's the only other one I know of.

I'm Old Skool, Bronies, I shower love and affection on 3xOSC and she treats me right. I do the bells and whistles with effects and clever channel manipulation. If I have to spend more than three minutes finding a sound, I forget the reason I went looking for one in the first place. =3

I'd use FM8 more if it didn't get along poorly with REAPER's automation.

Hey, don't start hatin' on Massive now. Resident Massive fan here. Everything in my tracks is Massive, pads, synths, bass, drums, even the poni samples. All massive. One wouldn't know just from listening, but it's great.

I actually think he could have explained a lot more on what he was doing in the mix. Because it's in fact where most of the sound processing is happening.
I don't have time for fancy signatures.
